Drew Gentle, originally from Los Angeles, received his BFA from Chouinard Art Institute (now California Institute of the Arts). His notable 50-year career as an animation artist included studio work for Disney & Hanna-Barbera, among many others.
Over the course of his career, he developed a reputation as a multi-skilled animation artist, becoming known as a top echelon conceptual designer, working from a script to create the “look” of new shows, constantly in demand for theatrical animated movies, direct-to-video features, and T.V. shows.
His credits include The Flintstones, Batman, Scooby-Doo, Bugs Bunny, The Smurfs, Yogi BearJohnny Quest, The Land Before Time, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Family Guy, as well as animated feature versions of King Kong, The King and I, and the Care Bears Feature.
While working for the studios, Drew unwound from the rigors of animation work by “playing” with abstract figurative personas, keeping hundreds of these drawings in notebooks. 30 years later, this trove of drawings forms the basis for his large print series & for paintings & sculpture.
After his career in animation ended, Gentle returned to his original impulse of creating fine art. Drew says “I had a full and wonderfully rewarding career in animation, something I can feel very good about, but by the time it ended, I was more than ready to do so . . . and I had a serious passion to do my own art.”
Drew arrived in Eureka Springs in the summer of 2007, where he
draws, paints and sculpts, exhibiting his work in various galleries, group
& solo shows.
